Everything you need to know about 1dayaweek. Whether you are an individual who wants to take part, or a Business, Council or Developer and need to know how the scheme works.

For individuals

What is 1dayaweek?

1dayaweek is a free photo competition with monthly prizes that encourages people to leave the car at home a little more often and choose more sustainable ways to travel.

Why should I take part?

There are lots of reasons to get involved. You could win a monthly prize, save money on fuel and vehicle running costs, help improve local air quality, reduce your environmental impact, and become more active and boost your wellbeing.

Who can take part?

Anyone aged 18 or over can take part.

People under 18 are welcome to participate, but their photo must be submitted by a parent, guardian or another responsible adult.

Taking part is completely free. There’s no need to create an account or sign up before entering. Simply submit your photo by email, through our WhatsApp group, or by tagging us on social media.

How do I take part?

It’s simple:

  1. Leave the car at home and choose a sustainable way to travel.
  2. Take a photo during your journey.
  3. Submit it by email, share it in our WhatsApp group, or post it on social media using #MY1DAW and tagging @1DAYAWEEK_.

If entering via social media, please make sure your account is public so our team can see your entry.

What modes of travel count?

We welcome journeys made by walking, running, cycling, wheelchair use and public transport.

How far do I need to travel?

There is no minimum distance or duration.

For some people, a short walk or wheel around their local area may be a significant journey. For others, a daily cycle commute may be much longer. We welcome sustainable journeys of all lengths. If you’ve travelled using one of the eligible modes and captured a great photo, we’d love to see it.

Do I have to leave the car at home every day?

No. The idea behind 1dayaweek is simple: if you can swap just one car journey each week for a more sustainable alternative, that’s a positive step.

Every journey counts, and everyone is welcome, whether you’re just getting started or already travel sustainably on a regular basis.

How often can I take part?

You can enter up to once per day.

To be eligible for that month’s competition, you must submit at least one entry during the calendar month.

When are winners chosen?

Entries are judged at the end of each calendar month. Winners are selected based on the quality of their photograph and how well it captures the experience and benefits of sustainable travel.

What are the prizes?

Monthly winners receive a £50 voucher for a retailer of their choice.

What should my photo show?

That’s up to you.

Whether it’s a scenic route, an interesting moment, your mode of transport or simply something that captures the experience of travelling differently, we’re looking for great photos that celebrate sustainable travel.

How will I know if I’ve won?

Winners will be contacted directly.

We also announce winners through our social media channels, newsletter and WhatsApp community.

Will you contact me at other times?

We’ll only contact you if you’ve won a prize or if you’ve chosen to subscribe to our newsletter and updates.

Who runs the competition?

1dayaweek was created and is managed by Mosodi. We work with employers, local planning authorities and developers to advise on travel planning and we deliver the cutting edge 1dayaweek behaviour change campaign wherever congestion, parking pressures and site accessibility are creating a negative impact. In 2024 we opened up the campaign, allowing anyone to take part, further delivering our objective of reducing car use.

Chris Taylor

1dayaweek is Chris’s dream child and he manages the overall programme. If you want to know about 1dayaweek, speak to Chris. Friendly and brimming with joie de vivre, he partakes in a monthly 13 mile walk to work and loves public transport. Genuinely.

Kat Stockburn

Kat runs slick 1dayaweek events, can quote a bus timetable like no one else and has more energy than the national grid. Essential when you are running a national campaign like 1dayaweek. Yorkshire through and through. A spade is most definitely a spade.

Jessica Giles

Jess can be found everywhere: from running 1dayaweek events, to dealing with clients, to running the website and social media channels. We like Jess. She's a genius and gets things done!

Molly Helicon

Molly can be often found at community events and public engagement activities. For Molly, active travel isn't about doing more—it's about making everyday journeys count. After all, every walk has a destination, even if it's just the bakery!

Rich Murphy

The big boss man and King of Quality Control. Loves Doves (the band!). Passionate about equality, equity and running. Has a car, walks to work. Isn’t evil. Doesn’t judge others.

For Businesses, Councils and Developers

I work for a council, developer or business. How can we get involved?

We offer 12-month 1dayaweek packages tailored to councils, developers, employers and other organisations looking to encourage more sustainable travel. Packages start from £6,000.

Each package includes a dedicated monthly prize for your residents, employees or customers, alongside a targeted campaign designed to maximise participation and behaviour change.

How does it work?

We manage the campaign from start to finish, making it easy for you to deliver an engaging behaviour change programme.

We’ll work with you to identify your target audience and agree the best communication channels. We’ll then promote the campaign over a 12-month period, manage entries, judge the competition, award the prizes, and provide regular monitoring and evaluation reports.

What’s included?

Every package includes:

  • A dedicated monthly prize for 12 months
  • A fully managed photo competition
  • A suite of branded promotional materials featuring your logo
  • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation reports
  • A comprehensive end-of-project report

The campaign can also be enhanced with launch events, branded collateral, bespoke social media content and other engagement activities.

Who can 1dayaweek be targeted at?

1dayaweek is flexible and can be tailored to a wide range of audiences and projects. Examples include:

  • Whole towns or cities
  • Individual neighbourhoods
  • New housing developments
  • Employment sites
  • Business parks
  • Hospitals and healthcare settings
  • Schools and colleges
  • New walking and cycling infrastructure
  • Workplace and residential travel plans
  • Social prescribing and community wellbeing programmes

Does it work?

Yes. 1dayaweek has delivered measurable reductions in car use across a range of projects, including:

  • 7% reduction in car use at Logistics North, Bolton
  • 9% reduction in car use at Hereford Enterprise Zone
  • 11% of staff at Salford Royal NHS Hospital committed to reducing how much they drive by one day a week

Our monitoring consistently shows that regular prize incentives are one of the strongest motivators for encouraging people to try travelling differently and maintain new habits over time.

What happens after the 12-month campaign ends?

At the end of your campaign, you’ll receive a comprehensive project report summarising participation, outcomes and impact.

One of the unique benefits of 1dayaweek is that the journey doesn’t have to end when your funding does. Participants can continue entering the national 1dayaweek competition after your local campaign finishes, helping to maintain the behaviour changes you’ve helped create.

Unlike many funded projects that stop when the budget ends, 1dayaweek includes an ongoing, self-funded monthly prize competition run by Mosodi. This legacy approach helps sustain engagement and extends the impact of your investment long after the initial campaign has finished.

How do we find out more?

To discuss your project or request a proposal, contact 1dayaweek@mosodi.co.uk. We’d be delighted to arrange an informal conversation about how 1dayaweek could support your objectives.
